Tennis Scoring & Match Terms
Ace – A serve that lands in the service box and is untouched by the opponent. Ad (Advantage) – The point after deuce; “Ad-In” means the server has the edge, “Ad-Out” means the receiver does. Break Point – A point where the receiver can win the game by breaking the server’s serve. Deuce – A 40–40 tie. A player must win two consecutive points to take the game. Double Fault – Two missed serves in a row, resulting in the loss of the point. Game – A segment of the match made up of points. Players need to win four points (by a margin of two) to win a game. Let – A serve that touches the net but still lands in the proper service box. It is replayed. Love – The term for zero in tennis scoring (e.g., “15–Love”). Match Point – A point that, if won, concludes the match. Set – A unit of scoring made up of games. Typically, a player must win six games by two to win a set. Tiebreak – A special scoring game used to break a 6–6 tie in a set, usually played to 7 points (win by 2).
Stroke Techniques & Shot Types
Forehand – A groundstroke hit on the dominant side of the body. Backhand – A groundstroke hit on the non-dominant side; can be one- or two-handed. Serve – The shot that starts each point; must land in the diagonally opposite service box. Volley – A shot hit out of the air before it bounces, usually near the net. Overhead – A powerful shot hit above the head, often in response to a lob. Drop Shot – A softly hit ball that barely clears the net and dies quickly on the opponent’s side. Groundstroke – Any shot hit after the ball has bounced (includes forehands and backhands). Topspin – A type of spin that causes the ball to dip quickly, allowing players to hit with net clearance and control.
Court & Positioning Terms
Baseline – The farthest back line of the court; where most rallies begin and are played. Service Box – The rectangular area where a serve must land to be valid. Sideline – The side boundary of the court. Singles and doubles have different sidelines. Net – Divides the court into two halves. Shots must clear the net to remain in play. Center Mark – The small line in the middle of the baseline, used to guide service positioning.
Gameplay & Strategy Terms
Rally – A continuous exchange of shots between players during a point. Lob – A high, arching shot meant to pass over an opponent who is close to the net. Crosscourt – A shot hit diagonally across the court. Down-the-Line – A shot hit straight along the sideline. Unforced Error – A mistake made on an easy shot, not caused by the opponent’s play. Winner – A clean shot that cannot be returned by the opponent.
